One of the mountains in the sacred Dewa Sanzan pilgrimage route, Mt Haguro is home to some of the oldest forests in Japan, if not the world. Come here for the forests.

4. MT HAGURO, YAMAGATA

Over the years, lava deposits from the eruption of Mount Aso have formed this stunning gorge. Rock columns and cliffs will accompany you as you take a boat ride on the river down below.

If you want to get a traditional Japanese village experience, Shirakawa-go is the place for you. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
